Skincare in Your 20's
Updated: Apr 16
So you’re in your 20’s and want to start taking care of your skin? I understand sis, we all want that Angela Basket and Naomi Campbell “glow” in our later years. No problem… let’s get you started!
1) Avoid The Sun - Use Sunscreen
I’m never going to stop saying this. Sun damage can take 10 to 20 to 30 years to appear. So all of that youthful sunbathing will catch up. But it’s not too late! Make a decision to avoid the sun and use sun protection EVERY SINGLE DAY! And reapply. Plus, we want to avoid sun cancer if at all possible.
2) Vitamin C
Vitamin C is an antioxidant. Meaning it stops (slows) the oxidation process. Think about yourself as a banana… As a banana ages, it develops brown spots, softens, and shrivels due to oxidation. The exact same thing happens to our skin except it's a much slower process and takes years to physically see. Vitamin C however helps to slow that process even more on a cellular level. So I fully believe it’s important to start using a Vitamin C serum in your 20’s.
3) Relax on the Physical Exfoliants
Halt! Drop the scrub!
Exfoliating is very important but I often see my younger clients going crazy with the scrubs. Face scrub when overused can cause micro tears in the skin resulting in inflammation and a roughing of texture. In your 20’s, your skin is still turnover at a decent rate meaning there is no need for excessive exfoliation. Stick to 1, maybe 2, times a week. Trust me, when you hit 30, you’ll need to amp it up so save your energy for now.
Also, I prefer chemical exfoliants. They are much more gentle on the skin and you don’t have to worry about micro injuries. My fave is a gentle enzyme used once or twice a week. Enzymes are like little PacMan that loosen and eat dead skin. You apply it like a mask, let sit for 3-10 minutes and wash off. Simple and very effective!
4) Vitamin A - Retinol
So this is really for those age 26 and above. It’s time to start using Retinol.
As you age, you lose collagen. Collagen is what gives your
face a nice, youthful contour and keeps you from having wrinkles. When collegan starts to deplete, you start to notice fine lines and wrinkles… and we want to push that process back as far as possible. So… in comes Retinol!
Retinol is a holygrial anti-aging type of product! It increases the production of collagen, lightens hyperpigmentation, fades keratosis spots, treats acne and speeds up cellular turnover. This is not a product you want to overlook. And because technology has improved so much, you no longer need to get a prescription to get high quality, results driven formulations.
Follow these guidelines in your 20’s and you’ll be ahead of the game in your 40’s!
