Category:Software tools for WindowsA remarkable number of genes underlie human cognitive behavior, and yet the genetic architecture and function of this set of genes is still unknown. In this project, we will combine human genetics, mouse genetics and cognitive assays to identify the genes and molecular pathways underlying human cognitive behavior. Recent genetic studies have revealed a very tight genetic correlation between human intelligence and performance in a set of mice assays that measure several aspects of cognitive behavior. In addition, converging studies of gene expression in human brain during development and evolution indicate that genes influencing cognitive ability in humans have increased expression in the brain during mammalian evolution and are expressed during early neurodevelopment. We will combine data from human populations, intercross populations between mouse strains with highly different cognitive abilities, and mouse mutants in order to identify the genes that influence the cognitive abilities measured in the mouse assays. Further, we will study the expression of these genes in mouse and human brain development. Overall, we will perform a large-scale genome-wide association analysis of cognitive behavior in mouse and human, followed by gene- and pathway-specific analyses. These aims are designed to yield a better understanding of the genes underlying human cognitive behavior, and provide a foundation for future studies of the genetic and molecular basis of brain function.The present invention relates to a liquid crystal display device of the so-called super twisted nematic (STN) type. The STN display device is relatively simple in structure, but is defective in that it requires a viewing angle of at least 60.degree. to achieve satisfactory display. To achieve a display at a smaller viewing angle, a so-called multi-domain STN display has been proposed. According to this technique, liquid crystal molecules are subjected to electric field treatment for causing the liquid crystal molecules to have different alignment directions in mutually adjacent display elements. As a result, the liquid crystal molecules are aligned in mutually different directions in the respective areas, and a display of clear contrast ratio can be obtained in a small viewing angle range of about 30.degree.. However, a complex and difficult electric field treatment has to be effected, and hence the technique is not suitable for practical use. Another method which is proposed for forming multi-domain structure by the use of a twisted structure of liquid crystal molecules is based on the so-called multi-plate system in which the liquid crystal molecules are sandwiched between multiple transparent electrodes and a transparent substrate and a black matrix of, for example, Ta or Cr is disposed in the respective pixels.
